"Take Me To The River"    

 Opening Reception Thursday, May 1, 2003    7 to 11 p.m.
The public is invited to this opening that will include Egyptian entertainment.  The exhibit runs through June 30th.  Gallery hours:  Monday  thru Friday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
    

A multinational, multidisciplinary exhibition.  From the Nile to the Potomac.  An exhibit that appeared in Cairo, Sept. - Oct. 2002, featuring artists from the U.S. (David Carlson, Richard L. Dana, Sherman Fleming, Judy Jashinsky, Betsy Stewart, Lars Torres) and Korea (Y. David Chung), Egypt (Shady El Noshokaty, Ashraf Fouad, Khaled Hafez, Moataz Nasr, Hossam Sakr) , Pakistan (Mansoora Hassan) , Brazil  (Ivana Panizzi) , Peru Jose Ruiz), Germany (Ruza Spak).  

This exhibit is being staged in conjunction with "Whispers From the Other River: Contemporary Egyptian Art" at the World Bank - 600 19th Street, NW

The artists at the Millennium Arts Center open their studio doors to the public.  See the artists at work as well as seeing the work they create.  The following artists will be participating:  Richard Dana, Judy Jashinsky, Barbara Kerne, Brenda Belfield, Andres Tremols, Kari Minnick - Meltdown glass studio at MAC, Sherrell Medberry, Mark Planisek, Gordon Kray, Bonnie Holland, Brian Hamill, Georgia Goldberg, Ann Creager & Quentin Rankin - art preservation, Art Enables.

“Meltdown” - the glass program at the Millennium Arts Center


MELTDOWN GLASS STUDIO is improved, expanded and thriving as we begin
our third year at our home at the MILLENNIUM ARTS CENTER. The studio
continues to provide the finest in internationally recognized education
in the glass arts.

This fall we are teaching new sought after courses offered only at
MELTDOWN GLASS STUDIO.  We offer beginning to advanced classes in
kilnformed glass and glass blowing (in cooperation with local studios).
Courses are being planned featuring guest artists and the latest in
innovative uses of glass and other media. We will be hosting guest
artists in conjunction with the WARM GLASS WEEKEND in September. For

FALL 2003 SCHEDULE

Art of the Vessel: First Time Fusers Workshop

The love of glass often begins with an elegant functional form. Learn
the fundamentals of glass fusing and slumping as you create your own
vessels and plates.  Students will learn to cut and assemble glass
designs that will be kiln fired and then sagged into molds.  Color and
design options will be explored.  All materials, use of tools, and kiln
firings are included.  This class is essential for beginners and
beneficial for those with some glass experience that would like to
broaden their experience in this area.

Capture the Light: Dynamic Design for Fused Glass

The transmission of light is an essential element of glass design.
Other design options such as opacity, transparency, line, form, and
texture are some of the many aspects of kilnformed glass to be
explored. Class projects considered range from functional art such as
vessels, tiles and light fixtures, to wall art and sculpture. This
class is a natural follow-up to Art of the Vessel.  ***Designers in all
media are encouraged to see the possibilities of kilnformed glass in
this design intensive class.  All materials, use of tools, and kiln
firings are included.

Time:              10-1pm

Maximum enrollment: 6

*The Original Fusing Freestyle: Guided Open-Studio for Fused Glass

Work independently on your own projects with the guidance of a
professional glass artist. Base glass, use of studio tools and
equipment, and kiln firings are included.  Previous experience or
permission of instructor required.

                        Saturdays, October 4, 11, 18, 25
                        Saturdays, November 1, 8, 15, 22
Time:               2-5pm
                        Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, 1-4pm,

Pure Glass: Glass Display Stands

Your pieces belong on a pedestal! Design and make unique glass supports
for your sculptural and functional glasswork. Kiln casting, fusing,
slumping and cold working techniques will be explored.  All materials,
use of tools, and kiln firings are included.  Previous glass
experiences or permission from instructor is preferred for this class.

Great Glass Gift Extravaganza: A Wild Weekend of Intensive Gift Making

Make your own handcrafted art glass gifts. In two afternoons you will
have the opportunity to immerse yourself in various glass arts and make
gifts and decorations for the holidays or any ocaission. Gift
possibilities may include: bowls, plates, jewelry, ornaments, coasters,
decorations, sun/moon catchers, personalized items. There will be lots
of help on hand to help you learn as you make extraordinary glass
pieces.
